BIG SHAPES is the free improvisation collective of Jonathon Haffner (sax), Jonathan Goldberger (guitar), Dave Harrington (bass/electronics), and Max Jaffe (drums/electronics).

After several years of playing together around Brooklyn and NYC, the group went into the studio for the first time. In the fall of 2020, Harrington took these files and, applying the same spirit of improvisation that guided the initial recordings, crafted a creative mixdown embracing and amplifying the electronic experimentation already present in the ensemble. These are some of the results.

Moving effortlessly between sheets of sound, pointillistic interrogations, electronic-laden soundscapes, and post-poly-rhythmic groove, the music blooms in the spirit of instinct and immediacy, and embraces the any-thing-can-happen ethos of free improvisation while maintaining an dedication to atmosphere and compositional development.
